Revision: Chemistry

Seperation technique

Seperating funnel - Seperate two immiscible (Insoluble) liquids.
Denser liquid will be at the bottom, while the less dense liquid is at the top.


Simple/Fractional distillation - Seperate two miscible liquids with different boiling points.
5 Measures need to take note.
1) Ensure flask is not more than half full
2) Place boiling chips to ensure smooth boiling
3) Place bulb of thermometer at the entrance of the condenser to measure the boiling point of the water distilled out
4) Ensure water pass through the outer tube of the condenser
5) Condenser is sloped downwards

Filtration - Seperate insoluble solid from a mixture.

Evaporation to dryness/Crystallisation - Sepearate soluble solid from a mixture.
Crystallisation - Used when the solid decomposes upon strong heating.
The mixture is boiled till it reached a saturated point, than allowed to cool at room temperature to form crystals.

To test whether a solution is saturated.
- Dip a glass rod into solution. If crystals are formed on the glass rod, the solution is saturated.

Chromatography - Only works when it is soluble in a solvent.
The more soluble it is, the faster it travels.
Rf value = Distance travel by substance/Distance travelled by solvent.
